In addition, 17 different players earned all-tournament honors over the weekend. Santa Clara came in at 0 after going 1-1 over weekend. Receiving votes for the first time ever are the San Francisco Lady Dons with six votes. USF defeated 19 Washington State on the road on August 30. San Diego sits just outside the top with 87 votes, while Loyola Marymount garnered 13 votes.lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13; Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, Saint Marys and San Diego all won tournaments over the weekend. All four teams sit tied atop the league standings with perfect 3-0 records.lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13; Loyola Marymount claimed the title of the 003 LMU Furama Hotel Invitational, behind junior Kelli Nerison, who was named the tournament's most valuable player. It was the first collegiate MVP selection for the middle blocker, who finished the weekend with 9 kills and 11 blocks.lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13; Senior outside hitter Brittanie Budinger became just the sixth player in USF history to surpass 1,000 career kills with her first tally against Oklahoma. Budinger ended the weekend with 1,010 kills and needs just two kills for sole possession of fourth place, passing Chiara Lawrence (1993-96).lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13; Portlands Michelle Oakland led the Pilots to a -1 record over the weekend and earned MVP honors at the Boise State Tournament for her efforts. For the week, Oakland averaged 3.8 kills per game and hit for an impressive .631. She also averaged 1.08 blocks per game, along with 1. points.lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13; San Diegos Devon Forster posted a tournament-best 3 kills as the Toreros swept the competition at the 003 Sun Devil Volleyball Classic held at Arizona State's Wells Fargo Arena this weekend. Forster was honored as tournament MVP, killing in USD's five-game victory over preseason Mountain West Conference favorite Utah on Saturday morning. Stanford holds a -0 series lead against USD and is one of the favorites to contend for the national title. Signor now chases former Zags Aimee Wilson and Diane Pascua for 8th and 9th place on the Bulldogs career chart. Wilson sits in 9th with 961 digs while Pascua finished her career with 963 career digs....Bulldogs junior outside hitter Christina Davis earned all-tournament honors at the Oregon State Volleyball Showcase. Davis collected a team-high 4 kills to average 4.1 kills per game with an attack percentage of .77. Davis also finished second on the team with 3 digs on the weekend and added seven block assists. It was Nerison's first collegiate MVP selection...Senior Kealani Kimball and junior Nicole Oehlman joined Nerison on the 003 LMU Furama Hotel Invitational all-tournament team...Senior Tiana Newsome's seven solo blocks on the weekend brings her career solo blocks to 83, moving her up to the third slot on LMU's all-time career solo block leaders. Wilkins moved into the sixth place spot on Pepperdine's all-time career kill list when she registered 3 kills (17.6 kills per game) in three matches this weekend. Her total now stands at 1,138. Mehlhorn recorded 139 set assists (46.3 per game) for an outstanding .444 setting percentage. Against Notre Dame, the Tempe, Ariz., native produced set assists and completed seven digs. Michelle Oakland was named Tourney MVP and Heather Denison garnered all-tourney honors. Oakland posted a career-best 19 kills and hit for an impressive .70 hitting percentage, tying a career-best six block assists versus Bowling Green State. Denison amassed 41 kills and posted a hitting percentage of .360 over the weekend...As a team, Portland is averaging 1.00 kpg, and hitting .33. That season the Gaels opened with four consecutive victories...Kaui Salzman and Cassandra Kolkka were named all-tournament selections for their play. Salzman posted a double-double against the Matadors in SMCs final match, recording 14 kills and 1 digs. Salzman is the third different Gael this season to post a double-double and finished the tournament with 30 kills and 18 digs. Kolkka, only a freshman, played solid throughout the tournament by finishing with a team-high 7 digs...Jill Parmele is the first volleyball WCC Player of the Week from SMC since 1999.lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13;lt;bgt;San Diego Toreros Head Coach: Jennifer Petrielt;/bgt;lt;brgt; Kristen Hurst averaged a tournament-best 3. digs per game, leading all players with 39 during tournament play at the 003 Sun Devil Volleyball Classic...Playing in her first collegiate match, outside hitter Cassie Wolpern collected a match-best 18 kills in leading San Diego past Ohio in four games. Wolpern was the nation's all-time prep record holder in kills. Wolpern also led all players with 1 digs in USD's season opener vs. Ohio. On the weekend, the freshman ranked second in digs (37) and fourth in total kills (4), earning her all-tournament recognition...Setter Lindsey Sherburne averaged 13.17 assists over the three-match weekend tournament in Tempe. Sherburne threatened an all-time USD school record when she handed out 61 assists during a Torero victory over Utah on Saturday. No other player in the tournament had more assists than Sherburne's 18.lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13;lt;bgt;San Francisco Dons Head Coach: Jeff Nelsonlt;/bgt;lt;brgt; San Francisco experienced one of the best weekends in program history as they took home the title at the Cougar Challenge held in Pullman, Washington. Led by first-year Head Coach Jeff Nelson, the Lady Dons garnered their first victory in school history against a top- opponent as USF upset then-19 Washington State, 3-. The Cougars were a 00 NCAA Elite Eight team. In addition, USF beat Wichita State 3- and swept through Oklahoma for a 3-0 start to the season...The Lady Dons 3-0 start gained national attention, as San Francisco received six votes in the latest AVCA/USA Today top- poll...Joining tournament MVP Brittanie Budinger on the Cougar Challenge all-tournament team were Caroline Skacel and Teresa Russell. Russell played in her first matches since suffering a knee injury in 001.lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13;lt;bgt;Santa Clara Broncos Head Coach: Jon Wallacelt;/bgt;lt;brgt; Santa Clara opened with a tough four-game road loss to Pacific, but rebounded to defeat San Jose State 3-1 on Saturday...Head Coach Jon Wallace made some changes to the starting lineup after the loss to Pacific, moving sophomore Toni Muratore to the outside, and inserting senior Becky Biniek at middle blocker. Both players, and the Broncos, benefited from the line-up change as Muratore posted a career-high kills, while Biniek posted 13...Santa Claras victory over San Jose State added to the Broncos victory total in the Rivalry Series with San Jose State.
