USF volleyball ran a marathon in the opening match of the 2003 campaign against Wichita State downing the Shockers 3-2 (30-32, 30-28, 30-27, 26-30, 16-14) in 2:22 minutes Friday at the 2003 Washington State Cougar Challenge. The match marked the debut of USF head coach Jeff Nelson. San Francisco (1-0) got a team-high 18 kills and a match-high 21 digs from senior outside hitter Brittanie Budinger, who led four Dons in double-digit kills.
Pepperdine 3, EWU 0
The No. 5 Pepperdine Waves (1-0) defeated the Eastern Washington Eagles (0-1) 30-19, 30-24, and 30-20 in the second match of 2003Four Points Sheraton Classic Friday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu. Senior outside hitter Katie Wilkins completed 18 kills on the night, while libero Christina Hinds accounted for 17 digs, and freshman Kristin McClune, making her collegiate debut, recorded four service aces.
Oregon State 3, Gonzaga 2
Gonzaga University rallied from two games down Friday to take Oregon State University to five games, but the Beavers prevailed 15-5 in the decisive fifth game to ruin the Bulldogs' season opener in the OSU Volleyball Showcase at Gill Coliseum. OSU defeated Gonzaga for the fifth time in six overall outings in the series 30-23, 30-16, 28-30, 28-30, 15-5.
Portland 3, Utah Valley State 1
Four Pilots racked up double figure kills as the University of Portland women's volleyball team opened its 2003 season with a 3-1 (30-23, 23-30, 30-26, 30-27) victory over Utah Valley State College at the Boise State Invitational on Fri., Aug. 29. Portland improves to 1-0 on the season, while UVSC falls to 0-1.
