In the opening game of the 2001 season, the Saint Mary's College women's volleyball team (0-1) was defeated by Cal Poly (1-0), 3-1, in the opening game of the Saint Mary's Tournament.

Cal Poly jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, taking the first two games 30-22 and 30-24. The Gaels rallied in the third game for a 33-31 victory before the Mustangs closed the match in game four with a 30-24 win.

The Gaels were paced by senior outside hitter Meagan Smith, who tallied a double-double with a career-high 18 kills and 14 digs. Rachel Avilla, who made her return from season ending knee injury in 2000, added nine kills and a match-high 16 digs. Meg Hauser and Carla Jo Vandenbark also posted double-digit kills in the match with 11 each. Setter Brooke Lowry posted a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs.

Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, September 1, when they battle Centenary College in the final match of the Saint Mary's Tournament. First serve for the match with be 7:05 pm. Cal Poly will face Centenary College at 1:00 pm. Both games will be in McKeon Pavilion.
