lt;bgt;Around the WCClt;/bgt;lt;brgt; lt;Pgt;13; Four WCC teams remained ranked in the most recent AVCA/USA Today poll, led by the Pepperdine Waves coming in at 6. Santa Clara won three straight over the weekend to rise to 16, while Loyola Marymount moved up to 4. San Diego stayed put after making its debut in the poll last week at 1. The undefeated San Francisco Dons continued to climb toward entering the top , earning 70 votes (7 overall) in this weeks poll. lt;Pgt;13; The West Coast Conference dominance of non-conference tournaments continued this week with two WCC teams winning tourney titles over the weekend. That takes the leagues championship total to 1 out of the tournaments WCC teams have participated in this season. The WCC tournament MVP count went up to 18 for the 003 season. lt;Pgt;13; With wins over Air Force and Eastern Illinois on Friday, San Francisco now owns the longest win streak to open the volleyball season in WCC history, passing the 1997 Pepperdine team which started the year with a 13-game win streak. The Dons have won four straight tournaments this year behind the play of three-time tourney MVP Brittanie Budinger and Teresa Russell, who claimed MVP honors at the Viking Classic. lt;Pgt;13; With the win over George Washington last week, Santa Claras Jon Wallace became the second most winningest coach in SCU volleyball history with 99 victories. Mary Ellen Murchison coached for 11 seasons and posted 16 wins with 18 defeats from 1978-88. Wallace has accumulated his wins against only 37 defeats in less than five full years at the helm of the program. Wallace will go for win 100 against Hawaii in the Broncos home opener Sunday, September 8. Gonzaga's career leader in digs is Linda Bushinski with 1,303 career digs from 1984-88... Senior Abby Cullen was selected to an all-tournament team for the third consecutive week as she was named to the Montana State Wingate Inn-vitational in Bozeman. Cullen helped the Bulldogs post a 1- record at the event, the second win of the season for the Bulldogs. .lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13;Loyola Marymount Lions Head Coach: Steve Stratoslt;brgt; LMU's Kealani Kimball led the Lions (11-) to a 1-1 run in Hawaii, posting 36 kills, digs, four block assists, and two aces in the week's two matches. Against UNLV, the senior co-captain recorded 19 kills and a .370 hitting percentage, as the Lions defeated the Rebels in three games for the second time this season. Kimball was also tough against No. Hawaii, putting on a show for her hometown crowd of over 6,000, with her fifth double-double of the season (17 kills, 13 digs)...LMU will play one last non-conference home match against San Diego State before embarking on a three-game road trip prior to league play. At 6-0, the Lions have the best home record in the conference..lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13;Pepperdine Waves Head Coach: Nina Mathieslt;brgt; Pepperdine cruised to victory over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Wednesday night by a score of 3-0 (30-4, 30-1, 30-4). Senior Katie Wilkins posted a match-high 14 kills, while sophomore Katy Daly sparked the Waves with a double-double performance totaling 13 kills and 13 digs...Pepperdine completed their pre-conference schedule by overpowering Harvard Crimson with a quick 3-0 victory. Pepperdine hit .0 in the match and committed only seven attack errors, while holding Harvard to 1 kills and a .030 hitting percentage. The Waves will take off a week before opening WCC play on Oct. 3 against San Francisco in Malibu...Since assuming a starting role three matches into the season, freshman Sophia Milo has been a big reason Pepperdine is ranked No. 14 in the country in hitting, while leading her team in blocking. Furthermore, on Sept. 1 she broke the all-time Pepperdine hitting percentage record (.900)..lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13; Portland Pilots Head Coach: Doug Sparks Sara Vercruyssen posted a season-best 0 kills to lead Portland past San Jose State, 3-1 last week. Vercruyssen currently ranks ninth in the WCC in kills per game at 3.81. She also ranks ninth in points averaging 4. per game...Michelle Oakland continues to lead the West Coast Conference with a .391 hitting percentage. Oakland has recorded two of the top three single-match hitting percentages this season with a .70 outing against Boise State and a .70 against Bowling Green State...Portland is riding a four-game winning streak with three of its next four games at home..lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13;Saint Marys Gaels Head Coach: Jon Stevensonlt;brgt; The Gaels were off last week...Saint Marys will play two local matches back-to-back this week as they travel down to San Jose State (9/3) on Tuesday and host Sacramento State on Wednesday (9/4). Shes now moved into ninth place on the San Diego all-time kills list with 1,004 and shes only a junior...All three of San Diegos losses have been to teams that rank in the top 1 (Stanford, USCB and Michigan State)..lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13;San Francisco Dons Head Coach: Jeff Nelsonlt;brgt; Teresa Russell has 997 career kills to rank seventh on the USF all-time kills list and should be the seventh player in program history to pass 1,000 and second this season (Brittanie Budinger). In addition, Russell ranks third in career blocks (374), fourth in solo blocks (98) and is 10th in digs (779). On the season, Russell has 10 kills, ranks second on the Dons with 3.89 per game average and leads USF in hitting percentage (.337) and blocks (1.44)...The Dons have already surpassed last seasons win total by nine victories...With Russell winning Player of the Week honors this week, San Francisco has earned two Player of the Week honors in the same season for the first time (back to 1994)..lt;pgt; lt;Pgt;13;Santa Clara Broncos Head Coach: Jon Wallacelt;brgt; The 16th-ranked Santa Clara Broncos will open its 003 home season with a match against No. Hawaii that is being played as part of the AVCA Sunday Night Spike package on College Sports TV (channel 610)...All-American Becky Potter needs just 37 kills to break into the top 10 on the WCC career kills list.
