Sep 9- Four WCC squads returned to action Tuesday night, with three teams emerging victorious. #22 Loyola Marymount shut out Cal State Fullerton on the road. Portland swept Chicago State at home and San Diego defeated UC Irvine. Saint Mary's fell to #4 ranked Stanford by a score of 3-0.

San Diego 3, UC Irvine 1
San Diego defeated UC Irvine 31-33, 30-25, 30-16, 30-24 Tuesday at Crawford Court and improved to 4-2. San Diego out-hit the Anteaters, putting away 67 kills to UCI??s 37. The Torero defense also bettered UCI??s with a 70-40 dig advantage.

Four Toreros posted double-figure kills, led by Devon Forster, who had 16 kills and 11 digs. Christie Dawson followed with 15 kills while Katie Kahlweiss and Bridget Merritt recorded 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Setter Lindsey Sherburne had 54 set assists in the win.

Portland 3, Chicago State 0
The University of Portland volleyball team defeated Chicago State, 3-0 (30-24, 30-27, 30-19) for the second time this season on Tues., Sept. 9 at the Chiles Center. The Pilots improve to 5-2 overall, while Chicago State falls to 0-5.

Portland controlled the match early on and never let up. The Pilots held Chicago State to a .114 hitting percentage in game one, a -.064 percentage in game two and a .000 percentage in game three. The Pilots were edged off the block, 6-5, but held the Cougars to just 25 kills on the night. Portland hit for .233 in the match.

Sara Vercruyssen led all players with 18 kills and hit for an impressive .455, tying a career-best. Vercruyssen also tallied 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Heather Denison added 13 kills and a .348 hitting percentage, along with 11 digs. Sheena Surplus dished 40 assists and 10 digs, while Michelle Oakland added nine kills. Coach Sparks unloaded the bench as 10 players saw time in the match.

Loyola Marymount 3, Cal State Fullerton 0
Dina Debernardi had 14 kills and Nicole Oehlman had 38 assists and 10 digs as No. 22 Loyola Marymount swept Cal State Fullerton, 30-22, 30-19, 30-27, in a nonconference volleyball match at Titan Gym Tuesday night. The Lions improved to 8-0 while Fullerton fell to 5-3.

The Lions outhit Fullerton, .270 to .154, and had six blocks to the Titans' five. Tiana Newsome had 12 kills and Kealani Kimball had 10 for LMU. Fullerton was led by Sarah Morrison, who had 12 kills and 16 digs.

Stanford 3, Saint Mary's 0
The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team fell to No. 4-ranked Stanford by a final score of 3-0. Game scores for the Gaels loss to the Cardinals were 30-22, 30-21, and 30-21. With the loss the Saint Mary's fell to 5-3 overall on the season while Stanford improved to 5-1.

Senior Jill Parmele again led the Saint Mary's efforts on the evening as she total a match-high 17 kills and seven digs against Stanford. The senior also finished the match by posting two aces and two assists. Also contributing for the Gaels was Mandy Bible. The freshman finished with a match-high 35 assists for Saint Mary's.

Also providing a superior effort for the Gaels was Lindsey Bogason. The junior assisted the Gaels with one block assists, eight kills and five digs. Wrapping up the effort for Saint Mary's was Kaui Salzman. The sophomore chalked up a team-high 11 digs and seven kills against Stanford.
