September 11-USF volleyball opened the home portion of the 2002 season when they hosted the 14th-ranked Bruins of UCLA on the one year anniversary of the attacks on September 11. The national tragedy was memorialized with a moment of silence prior to the start of the match. Once the match started, USF showed flashes of brilliance, but UCLA displayed stretches of brilliance in handing the Dons a 30-16, 30-28, 31-33, 30-16 loss Wednesday in non-conference action in War Memorial Gym. Four Bruins reached double-figure kills on the night, led by a match-high 16 from junior middle blocker Cira Wright. USF countered with a team-high 15 kills from Brittanie Budinger to go along with nine digs to pace the San Francisco offense for the eighth consecutive contest. Junior Caroline Skacel pounded a career-high 11 kills to go along with 10 digs to complete the double-double for San Francisco, while junior middle blocker Liz MacAusland added nine kills and five blocks. USF returns to action when they host the 2002 Molten Golden Gate Classic Sept. 13-14 at War Memorial Gym. Butler, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne, Washington State and USF comprise the tournament field. The Dons open the contest against IUPUFW in the 7:30 PM contest.
