The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team (2-7/0-1 WCC) dropped its West Coast Conference opener to San Francisco (6-4/1-0 WCC), 3-1, on Friday night at McKeon Pavilion

The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team (2-7/0-1 WCC) dropped its West Coast Conference opener to San Francisco (6-4/1-0 WCC), 3-1, on Friday night at McKeon Pavilion. Brittanie Budinger paced the Lady Dons with a match-high 19 kills while adding 13 digs.

San Francisco jumped out to an early lead in the match, winning the first two games by scores of 30-23 and 30-25. Saint Mary?s responded with a 30-22 victory in game three, but the Lady Dons recovered and wrapped up the match with a 30-27 victory in game four. The Dons posted impressive marks in games one and two with .306 and .343 hitting percentages, respectively. The Gaels out-hit the Dons in game three .246 to .149, the only time that occurred in the four-game match.

The Gaels were paced by senior Carla Jo Vandenbark's 14 kills in the conference opener. Freshman Lindsey Bogason posted a .400 hitting percentage en route to 13 kills. Rachel Avilla had 11 kills and 12 digs and Meg Hauser also had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Setter Brooke Lowry tallied 52 assists to go along with 12 digs.

Budinger posted an impressive .366 hitting percentage in the match as she helped the team to a .242 hitting percentage overall. Teresa Russell had a strong night with 17 kills and a match-high 20 digs. Amanda Willnerd was steady all night as the chipped in with 13 kills and 16 digs. Setter April Scoggin tallied 55 assists and 13 of the teams 88 digs.

Saint Mary's will return to WCC action on Saturday when it hosts #20 Santa Clara in McKeon Pavilion at 7:05 pm. San Francisco will hit the road for a Saturday evening match against San Diego.
