Santa Clara 3, San Jose State 2

The 19th-ranked Santa Clara University women's volleyball team opened up its 2002 home season with a 3-2 win over cross-town rival San Jose State in front of 1,009 fans inside the Leavey Center.

Behind career-high performances in kills by junior Becky Potter (28) and freshmen Cassie Perret (20) and Alyssa Lantz (19), the Broncos improved to 11-2 on the season. Junior setter Kelli Sousa also set a new career-high in sets with 71 to go along with seven kills and 10 digs. Potter added 13 kills on the night while senior co-captains Chrissy Hirsch and Cindy Hirsch chipped in with 20 and 14 digs, respectively.

San Diego 3, Colrado State 1

The San Diego Torero volleyball team won their sixth straight match and improved to 14-3 overall after beating visiting Colorado State Saturday night. USD defeated the Rams 27-30, 31-29, 30-25, 30-23 in the final match of the 2002 USD Tournament. The Toreros win over Colorado State completed a perfect week for San Diego after sweeping their previous four opponents.

The Toreros fell behind 10-2 in the first game and saw the Rams come away with a 27-30 victory. In games two and three the Toreros used timely serving from sophomore Katie Kahlweiss and offense from senior Noel Frohman to take control of the match. Kahlweiss served three straight aces in game two and Frohman totaled a match-best 24 kills. In game four the Toreros won easily thanks to senior Debra Robertson who finished the night with seven blocks and 16 kills.
