San Francisco - Senior outside hitter Rachel Avilla pounded a match-high 28 kills on .471 hitting to lead Saint Mary's to a 31-33, 30-26, 30-28, 30-28 victory in the 2002 West Coast Conference opener against San Francisco Friday at War Memorial Gym. USF got yet another outstanding individual effort from junior outside hitter Brittanie Budinger, who terminated 26 kills to go along with 18 digs, but it was not enough against the Gaels.
San Francisco drops their fifth consecutive match with the loss and had a modest three-game winning streak against the Gaels snapped. Saint Mary's did it with defense and dominated at the net recording 12.0 team blocks, while the Dons managed 6.0. The Gaels also out-hit USF .271-.222, including a .286-.225 advantage in the deciding game four.
Avilla led three Gaels in double-digit kills, including 18 kills and nine digs from sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Bogason, while junior outside hitter Jill Parmele added 15 kills, nine digs and four blocks.
USF returns to action Saturday when they host San Diego in WCC play at 7:00pm.
