The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team (3-10) snapped an eight-game losing skid with a 3-0 victory over UC Irvine (2-11) on Sunday afternoon at McKeon Pavilion. Rachel Avilla led the charge for the Gaels with a match-high 18 kills and 10 digs.

The games were very tight with Saint Mary's winning each game by scores of 30-28, 30-28 and 30-27, respectively. Games one and three were tightly contested throughout, but in game two, SMC opened a 14-3 lead before UC Irvine fought back to as close as 17-16. Saint Mary's posted a .355 hitting percentage in the match, while UCI posted a .195 hitting mark.

Avilla had a strong game for the Gaels and notched her first double-double of the season. She posted a .552 hitting mark in the match, converting 18-of-29 attacks with only two errors. Meagan Smith also had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Carla Jo Vandenbark had a strong hitting performance with a .538 hitting percentage and 8 kills. Setter Brooke Lowry tallied 44 assists to lead all players.

UC Irvine's Kelly Wing and Chanda McLeod tallied 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Ashlie Hain had 35 assists and 10 digs . Dana Kurzbard had a team-high .333 hitting percentage and tallied eight total kills.

Saint Mary's will host San Jose State on Tuesday, October 9 in McKeon Pavilion. First serve is slated for 7:05 p.m.
