Oct. 16 -- Looking to make a contribution to the September 11 Disaster Relief Effort in New York City, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team raised $2,000 after holding a "Digs For Disaster" campaign during its October 13 match against Santa Clara.

Prior to their match against the Broncos, Waves players went out and solicited sponsorship donations from family members, classmates and local businesses. The sponsors donated different amounts for each team dig and after Pepperdine registered a season-high 72 digs in a four-game victory over Santa Clara, the Waves raised a total of $2,000.

The money will be sent to a fund that will assist family members of the New York Fire Department.

"The players really wanted to do something that would help people affected by the disaster in New York and we came up with the ideal of 'Digs For Disaster'," assistant coach Tim Jensen said.

"The players went out on their own to get sponsorship donations and made a concentrated effort during the Santa Clara match to total as many digs as possible."
