#12 Pepperdine sweeps #13 Santa Clara to take possesion of first place in the WCC

The 14th-ranked Santa Clara University volleyball team never appeared to be in sync Friday night as the 12th-ranked Pepperdine Waves handed the Broncos a 3-0 loss in front of 1,021 fans in the Leavey Center.

Katie Wilkins had a dominant match for Pepperdine, posting 29 kills on 44 attempts with only three errors for a .591 hitting percentage. Paola Rodriguez posted a match-high 58 assists on the night while Brie Harris was the only other Pepperdine player in double-digit kills with 15.

The Broncos struggled all night offensively, posting their third lowest hitting percentage as a team this year with their .193 mark. Alyssa Lantz led all Broncos with her nine kills while Kelli Sousa posted 30 assists and Chrissy Hirsch registered 11 digs.

Overall on the night, Santa Clara had 32 fewer kills, 33 fewer assists and 27 fewer digs, but did manage to out-block the Waves by a 9-5 margin.

Santa Clara will return to action next weekend at home as they play host to Bay Area rival San Francisco Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Leavey Center.

San Diego 3, Gonzaga 0
San Diego (19-4, 4-1 WCC) connected for a .345 team attack percentage on Saturday night as the host Toreros defeated Gonzaga (4-15, 2-4 WCC). USD won the contest 30-19, 30-18 and 30-17.

Devon Forster and Noel Frohman led the balanced Torero attack which hit over .285 in each game with over 17 kills in each game.

Christina Davis was the only Gonzaga player to reach double-digit kills as she finished with a team-high 10. Heather Signor was the Zags top defensive player with 13 digs. Gonzaga's Abby Cullen did finish with four total blocks and her two block assists moved her into ninth place on the Gonzaga career chart.

LMU 3, USF 0
Loyola Marymount hit .600 in game one and rolled past USF from there, seizing a 30-15, 30-23, 30-18 West Coast Conference volleyball victory Saturday at War Memorial Gym.

Senior outside hitter Kristen Gallup led a trio of Lions in double-digit kills with a match-high 16 on .467 hitting to go along with a team-high 11 digs. Junior middle blocker Kealani Kimball hammered 12 kills on a .522 attack percentage and added 10 digs, while junior middle blocker Tiana Newsome added 10 kills.

Freshman outside hitter Jencie Lejeune led USF with 10 kills on a .429 hitting percentage, but did not get much help offensively. Junior outside hitter Brittanie Budinger added seven kills to go along with seven digs.

Saint Mary's 3, Portland 1
The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team (5-11/2-3 WCC) defeated the University of Portland (12-9/1-5 WCC), 3-1 on Saturday night. Individual game scores were 26-30, 30-28, 30-24, and 30-23.

The Gales were led by Brooke Lowry who posted a double-double with 48 assists and 16 digs, and Jill Parmele who posted 14 kills and four digs. Rachel Avilla contributed for the Gaels, with 10 kills, seven digs and four block assists. Saint Mary's also received help from Lindsey Bogason, who posted 14 kills and nine digs in the win. Kaui Salzman chipped in with 13 digs.

Portland was led by Sheena Surplus, who posted a match-high 52 assists and 14 digs. Heather Denison and Monique Kettler posted 19 and 18 kills, respectively.
