Los Angeles, CA- Four Gaels tallied double-digits in points as the Saint Mary's women's basketball team recorded a pivotal road win over LMU Thursday night from Gersten Pavilion. Junior guard Serena Benavente and senior center Sheridan Arredondo both recorded 13 points to lead SMC. After the win the Gaels improve to 9-10 overall and 3-3 in West Coast Conference play.
Three minutes into the contest the Gaels took the lead and didn't look back as they quickly took a double-digit lead and went into the locker room with a 39-29 lead. Sophomore guard Jontelle Smith drilled three consecutive treys while Benavente added another to establish the Gaels lead.
Saint Mary's expanded its lead to 15 with 18:14 left in the game but LMU chipped away at the margin until they were down two (56-58) with 4:48 left. Arredondo hit a lay-in and senior forward Eghosa Obaiza followed it up to give the Gaels a 62-57 lead with 3:19 left. Obaiza added seven rebounds.
The Gaels showed resolve and kept the host Lions at bay as Smith hit a free throw with 21-seconds left to make it four point lead and a two possession game.
SMC shot 48 percent (28-of-58) from the floor, 36 percent (4-of-11) from three and 50 percent (4-of-8) from the charity stripe.
LMU shot 41 percent (25-of-61) from the floor, nine percent (1-of-11) from three and 50 percent (8-of-16) the free throw line. Cassady Moore led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting.
Junior Lauren Shaughnessy flirted with a triple-double as she recorded six points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Junior forward Maija Lahde tallied eight points and eight rebounds while Smith finished with 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from downtown.
The Gaels kept the Lions second-leading scorer Amanda Patton to four points on 1-of-11 shooting. Patton was 0-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Saint Mary's will continue its Southern California road-trip against Pepperdine on Saturday, January 27. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. from the Firestone Fieldhouse on the Malibu campus.
