Women's Basketball Suffers Heartbreaking 76-73 Loss

Malibu, CA- The Saint Mary's women's basketball team suffered a 76-73 loss to Pepperdine Saturday afternoon from the Firestone Fieldhouse. Senior Sheridan Arredondo paced all scorers with 22 points. After the day the Gaels fall to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in West Coast Conference play.

On top of Arredondo's game-high 22 points the senior center grabbed nine rebounds and was 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Fellow senior Eghosa Obaiza tallied a double-double with 17 points and a career-tying 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jontelle Smith tallied 20 points on 4-of-6 shooting from downtown.

With the score tied at 72 with 1:19 left the Waves took a two point lead when Teena Wickett converted a fast-break bucket. Obaiza pulled the Gaels within one (74-73) with 11 seconds left after making 1-of-2 free throws but Daphanie Kennedy drilled two attempts from the line to make the score 76-73. The Gaels were unable to get a good look as time expired.

SMC went into the locker room at the half with a 39-33 lead and at one point had a nine point lead with 12:30 left in the first frame.

The Gaels shot 42 percent (24-of-57) from the floor, 5-of-11 from three and 20-of-27 from the charity stripe. The Waves converted 52 percent (30-of-58) of their shots while knocking down 36 percent (5-of-14) from three and 69 percent (11-of-16) from the line.

Kennedy led the Waves with 17 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. The junior guard added six rebounds and handed out two assists. Wickett tallied 12 points and four rebounds while Teiosha George grabbed 11 boards and scored nine points.

Saint Mary's junior guard Lauren Shaughnessy handed out six assists and grabbed four boards. Maija Lahde and Serena Benavente each had four points.

Saint Mary's will continue on the road in WCC play against rival Santa Clara. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday, February 3 at 2 p.m. from the Leavey Center on the Santa Clara campus.
