Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's forwards Maija Lahde and Eghosa Obaiza both tallied double-doubles to lead the Gaels to a 72-66 victory over Portland Saturday afternoon from McKeon Pavilion. Five Gaels scored in double-digits to move SMC to an 11-12 overall record and a 5-5 West Coast Conference mark.
The Gaels got out of the gate in a hurry behind the strength of Obaiza's nine points in the first four minutes of the contest. Portland (9-17, 1-10 WCC) did rally back to take a 30-28 advantage into the locker room.
SMC took a brief lead at the 17:44 mark when sophomore Jontelle Smith hit a jumper to make the score 33-32. UP quickly responded but it was the Gaels who grabbed the lead with 7:31 left and did not look back. Senior Sheridan Arredondo hit a jumper to move SMC to a 47-45 lead.
Lahde had a career-day for the Gaels. After tying a career-high on the glass in Thursday's contest, the junior forward bettered that by one by pulling down a game-high 16 boards. Lahde added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Smith led the Gaels with 16 points on 4-of-11 shooting, including three treys. Obaiza tallied another double-double after dropping in 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Junior Serena Benavente tallied 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting while handing out five assists. Arredondo finished with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
The Gaels shot 43 percent (23-for-59) from the floor, 39 percent (5-of-13) from three and 66 percent (21-of-32) from the free throw line.
The Pilots were led by a game-high 24 points by Kendra Morris. The guard shot 9-of-17 from the floor and drilled three treys. Laiken Dollente added 18 points on 7-of-23 shooting.
Saint Mary's will hit the road once again as it will head to the city to face USF. Tip-off is scheduled for Thursday, February 15 at 7:05 p.m. from the War Memorial Gym.
