San Diego, CA- The Saint Mary's women's basketball team earned a big West Coast Conference victory by defeating USD 51-47 Saturday afternoon from the Jenny Craig Pavilion. With the win the Gaels remain in third place and improve to 13-12 overall and 7-5 in WCC play.
The Gaels slowed the pace of the game and held the Toreros to only 47 points. SMC went into the half with a 24-20 lead after freshman Sierra Chambers converted a lay-in with nine seconds left.
Saint Mary's took its largest lead of eight with just under nine minutes to go when junior Maija Lahde broke loose for a right-handed lay-up.
The Gaels held a 49-47 lead with 56 seconds left but the Toreros were unable to convert as sophomore Jontelle Smith grabbed the big rebound.
Junior Serena Benavente put the game away when she sank two free throws with seven seconds left to secure the game.
The win marks the first time this season the Gaels have swept a road trip. Saint Mary's has won three consecutive WCC contests.
SMC was led by Lahde and her 15 points. Lahde grabbed six rebounds and shot 7-of-12 from the floor. Benavente tallied 13 points and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. The junior also recorded eight rebounds.
Amber Sprague paced the Toreros with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Kiva Herman tallied seven points and seven rebounds.
Saint Mary's shot 40 percent (18-of-45) from the floor, 13 percent (1-of-8) from three and 58 percent (14-of-24) from the line.
San Diego shot 33 percent (18-of-55) from the floor, 20 percent (2-of-10) from downtown and 69 percent (9-of-13) from the charity stripe.
Saint Mary's will conclude its regular season at home with two games. The Gaels will open the homestand on Thursday, February 22 against Pepperdine at 7:05 p.m. from McKeon Pavilion.
