Santa Clara vs. San Diego Quotes

Santa Clara Head Coach Jennifer Mountain
On advancing to the quarterfinals:
"We're absolutely thrilled to be in this position. I'm so proud of our team because they fought the entire time. We've been close so many times in the regular season. For these guys to pull out a victory is huge for our confidence and they really deserved it and I'm really proud of them. "I'm so proud of them and happy for them that it (close loss) didn't go that way today because that is what has happened. Today it went our way. It will be huge for our confidence. Not only for the tournament but for next year."

Santa Clara senior forward Maggie Goldenberger
On hitting the game-winning shot:
"I haven't ht one before. That was my first. It was good." "Alyssa had the ball and was dribbling up and was looking to give it to Lena. Lena was covered and they collapsed on her so she kicked it to me at the free throw line and I shot.

On her second half play:
"I was just excited. I had a rough first half and I knew I had to pick it up if we were going to have a chance to win. So I looked to score more and put the ball in.On the teams record:
"I think we are a much better team than our record shows and it feels good to prove that in the tournament. It's the best time to do it."

Sophomore guard Alyssa Shoji
On the win over San Diego:
"Yeah I think today we finally put it together. All season we were in it and we had many games this season where we ended up losing it by one or two points right at the end of the game. Today we got our shot and we did that. It felt good."

San Diego Head Coach Cindy Fischer
Opening Statement
"I first want to congratulate Santa Clara for playing an excellent game. I'm proud of our basketball team. I thought we fought today, we put the ball in our stars hand with 15 seconds left, Dominique, and she hits a huge shot. I can't say enough about what she has done for this team and what she will continue to do. I'm just really proud of all my kids they fought and battled and been through a lot this year. I know this group will get back to work. We have some tremendous recruits coming in and we'll be back here next year."

On Santa Clara's aggressive approach early in the game:
"Not really, I knew they were obviously going to try to keep the ball out of Dominique's hands and I thought they did a nice job. I fought hard against the screens and made us make extra passes. They had done that to a few other teams here as of late. Their last game against Portland came down to the wire as well, so this is a team that is continuing to get better and better and I am not really surprised with how they played. I just thought they play a heck of a game."

On defending Santa Clara's final shot:
"Down at their place, Shoji caught fire and hit three threes in 53 seconds of the game. Luckily, we had a really nice lead down there because she can really get going. So obviously the plan was to keep the ball out of the guards hands and we did exactly that. They outlet the ball to Gibson, it was fumbled for a while, and they get it back. Our goal was just to keep everyone in front of us and make them take a tough shot and Goldberg hit a tough shot."

San Diego sophomore guard Dominique Conners
On thinking San Diego had won the game:
"I thought I had put or team in an opportunity to win the game."
