SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Four different University of San Diego women's basketball players were in double figures, paced by sophomore forward Morgan Henderson's double-double, to help lead the Toreros to a 79-55 win over the Melbourne Roos in an exhibition game at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion Saturday evening.
Henderson looked impressive for the Toreros as she had a game-high 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds, including going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Junior center Amber Sprague was also a solid force for the Toreros as she racked up 14 points on a 6-for-12 performance from the field to go along with nine boards. Both sophomore forward Kiva Herman and freshman forward Sam Child looked impressive as well with each scoring 12 points apiece. The 2006-07 NCAA assist leader Amanda Rego, picked up from where she left off a year ago having a game-high 14 assists and pulled down seven boards.
In the first half, USD came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as they began the game on a 9-0 run. Herman ignited the run with a jumper and Henderson capped off the run scoring the final five points on a three pointer and a lay-up. The Roos refused to go away as they put together an impressive run of their own, using a 14-4 run to take a brief lead at 14-13.
USD responded with 7-0 run sparked by a Sprague jumper and capped by a Henderson three pointer to give USD a 20-14 edge. USD would build their lead up to as many as eight in the first half, but the Roos pulled back to within two at 30-28 going into the break.
In the second half, it was all USD as Sprague scored back-to-back baskets off passes from Rego to spark a 18-0 Torero run. The Roos were never able to recover from this spurt and USD kept the pedal to the medal. After the Roos ended the run with a bucket by Clarie McLeod, the Toreros went on a 10-3 run to build up their biggest lead of the game at 58-33. USD never looked back as they went on to claim the game by a final of 79-55.
The Toreros will open their regular-season on Friday with a trip to Bakersfield to take on the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m. USD will then return for their home opener on Sunday with a 2 p.m. tip-off against Cal State Northridge.
