Waco, TX - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team could not find their rhythm in their second game of the season, as #15 Baylor recorded a 101-47 win over the Gaels. Saint Mary's was led by sophomore Sierra Chambers with 11 points, and freshman Suzie Davis with seven points. Saint Mary's ran into reoccurring foul trouble throughout the game, recording 41 fouls to Baylor's 19. The Bears capitalized at the line as they went 42-58 on the night. The Bears were led by Jhasmin Player, scoring 29 points, while also picking up seven boards, one assists, and four steals. Player shot perfectly from the free throw line, going 13-of-13 from the charity stripe.
The Gaels could not contain Baylor's offense from the start, as the Bears took an early 13-3 advantage. Tomlinson put in a three-pointer to put the Gaels on the board, one minute into play, but Saint Mary's would not get another basket until five and half minutes in. Baylor continued to maintain a quick offense, as they went on a 10-0 run, taking a 35-12 lead over the visiting Gaels. Saint Mary's would go down 57-24 at the half, with 13 of the Gaels 24 points coming from the bench.
Sierra Chambers was the only Gael that seemed to find her offensive rhythm, as she scored seven of her 11 points in the first half. Chambers aggressiveness on offense led her to the free throw line, where she went 5-6. Saint Mary's was called for 23 fouls in the first half, while the Bears were called for eight.
Saint Mary's continued to struggle offensively in the second half. Baylor went on a 14-0 run to take an 84-31 lead over the Gaels, with 11:23 left to play. Saint Mary's would not be able to make up the difference, as they would fall to the #15 Baylor Bears 101-47.
Freshman Suzie Davis scored all seven of her points in the second half, sinking two threes and a free throw. Jontelle Smith added six points in the second half for the Gaels.
Saint Mary's has a quick turnaround, as they face Howard tomorrow November 11 in a 12:00 PM CST matinee. The match-up against Howard marks the Gael's last game of the Basketball Traveler's Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Baylor in Waco, TX.
