Moraga, CA - In their 2007-08 home opener, the Saint Mary's women's basketball team was defeated 83-60 by the San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday afternoon from McKeon Pavilion. SDSU's Jene Morris led all players with 17 points and Allison Duffy had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Gaels (2-2) had just two players score in double figures as Jontelle Smith had 12 points and Louella Tomlinson added 11 points and four blocks. Sierra Chambers came off the bench to finish the game with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor in 16 minutes.
San Diego State (2-0) led from the beginning after scoring the first seven points of the game. Paris Johnson opened the scoring with a layup and then Shanna Demus hit a three and a layup to give SDSU a 7-0 lead 1:16 into the game. Demus finished the game with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.
SDUS held a 19-7 lead following a basket by Morris at the 12:12 mark, but a 7-2 run by Saint Mary's, that included five points by Mikaela Cowles and a layup by Smith, cut the Aztec lead to seven points (21-14) with 10:49 remaining in the half.
That would be as close as Saint Mary's would get the rest of the afternoon, as San Diego State used a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to open a 14 point lead. After a Smith three cut the Aztec lead to 40-29, SDSU scored the final six points of the half to hold a 46-29 lead at the break.
San Diego State held its double digit lead the entire second half, as the pressure defense of the Aztecs forced the Gaels into 29 turnovers. San Diego State had 17 steals in the game. San Diego State turned the 29 turnovers into 22 points, which helped the Aztecs extend their lead to as many as 25 points (79-54) with three minutes remaining in the game.
Saint Mary's shot 38.9 percent (21-54) from the while the Aztecs shot a blistering 55 percent (33-60) against the Gaels. SDSU took just four 3-pointers in the game, making three of the four shots from behind the arc.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, November 23 when the Gaels host the Yale Bulldogs in the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic at 7 p.m. The tournament begins with Boise State and Cal State Bakersfield taking the court at 5 p.m.
