Moraga, CA - Senior guard Lauren Shaughnessy posted a double-double in the Gael's 85-70 victory over the Yale Bulldogs. Shaughnessy could do no wrong against the Bulldogs, shattering her previous career high by 10 points. The senior guard led all players in scoring, with 27 points, while also posting a career-high in rebounds; 11, blocks; three, field goals made; 10, and field goals attempted; 17. The Washington native picked-up an impressive six steals, dished out one assists, and shot 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.
The Gaels came out strong in McKeon Pavilion, recording the first 11 points of the first half. With their full-court press in full effect, Saint Mary's forced five Bulldog turnovers in the first two minutes. With an 11-0 advantage in hand the Gaels never looked back, as they kept the lead throughout the entire game.
At half time Saint Mary's held a 54-20 lead, with Shaughnessy contributing 15 of the Gael's points. Louella Tomlinson and Maija Lahde added nine points and three rebounds apiece in the first half. Melissa Colborne went 5-of-8 from the field for the Bulldogs, leading the game with 16 points. The Gael's defense was in full force throughout the first half, as Saint Mary's kept the Bulldogs to a 33.3 shooting percentage, recorded eight steals, three blocks, and forced 17 Yale turnovers.
In the second half Yale's intensity increased, but the Gael's kept their composure and continued to frustrate the Bulldogs on defense. Colbourne and Easley scored 11 and seven points respectively for Yale, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over 15 times in the second half.
Shaughnessy once again led the Gaels in scoring, chipping in 11 points in the second half. As one of the smallest members of the Gael squad, the 5'4 guard recorded a game-high seven rebounds in the second half, while also picking up two blocks. Joining Shaughnessy on the boards was senior Maija Lahde, pulling down seven. Lahde also recorded a double-double for the Gaels, tallying 14 points and 10 boards.
Saint Mary's defeated the Bulldogs 85-70, improving their record to 3-2, while Yale drops to 0-3. The Gaels will face the Boise State Broncos tomorrow night in the second day of the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic. The classic will begin at 5:05 PM, when the CS Bakersfield Roadrunners will take on the Yale Bulldogs, and will continue with Saint Mary's facing Boise State at 7:05 PM or 30 minutes after the first game ends.
