Lions Fall to No. 12 Aggies

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU women's basketball team couldn't overcome a fast start by No. 12 Texas A&M, falling to the Aggies 77-52 in the championship game of the LMU Ayres Hotel Thanksgiving Classic this afternoon in Gersten Pavilion. Amanda DeCoud led LMU with 11 points and four assists, and Amanda Patton and Valerie Ogoke were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Aggies (5-0) opened the game on fire, making five of their first eight shots to open up to a 13-2 lead at 15:19. The Lion offense finally got clicking, but the Aggies continued to play well offensively in the first half, shooting 55.9% from the field in the first 20 minutes of the game to take a 44-30 halftime lead. Takia Starks and Morenike Atunrase led TAMU with 12 points in the first half, while DeCoud led LMU with seven points. Ogoke and Patton each added six first half points.

LMU (3-3) came out of the halftime break with some energy, cutting the lead to 12 points, 46-34, but the Aggies scored nine unanswered points to pull out to a 21 point lead. The Lions rallied to cut the lead to 15 points on a Lisa Helmers three-pointer at 9:21, but Texas A&M scored seven straight points to go ahead by 23 at 5:15. The Aggies scored five of their last seven points from the free throw line for the 77-52 win.

Morenike Atunrase led TAMU with 22 points and five assists and was named the Tournament MVP. A'Quonesia Franklin dished out eight assists en route to earning All-Tournament team honors as well.

DeCoud led the Lions with 11 points with four assists, and Ogoke added eight points and five boards. Jennifer Hall finished with five rebounds, and added four points. Patton had six points with four steals.

West Virginia defeated American University, 57-55 in the tournament consolation game. WVU's Olayinka Sanni and American's Liz Hayes were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
