Women's Basketball Defeats Boise State; Lahde Named MVP

Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's defeated the Boise State Broncos, 78-63, as they claimed the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic title. Maija Lahde had MVP performances in both games for the Gaels, as she posted a double-double against Yale, and tallied 24 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and two assists against Boise State.

Three other Gael's recorded double-digits in points against the Broncos as Louella Tomlinson added 12, Serena Benavente picked up 10, and Jontelle Smith chipped in 11. Saint Mary's shot 41 percent from the floor (28-of-68), while converting on 19-of-26 free throws in the game.

Saint Mary's continuous hustle paid-off, as the Gaels recorded 52 rebounds to the Broncos 43. Lahde led the way on the boards, picking up eight, while four other Gaels recorded six apiece. The Gael's defense forced Boise State into 16 total turnovers, while keeping the Broncos to a 29.7 shooting percentage in the game. The Broncos shot 3-of-17 from beyond the arc and 19-of-64 from the floor. Freshman Louella Tomlinson posed to be a problem for Boise State inside, as she totaled a game-high five blocks. Tomlinson also chipped in 12 points, six assists, and six rebounds on the night.

The Broncos were led by Tasha Harris with 20 points, three steals, three rebounds, and two assists in the game.

The 2007-08 season marks the 10th consecutive year that the Gaels have hosted a Thanksgiving tournament, and with the two wins Saint Mary's improve to 14-5 overall while hosting the classic. The Gaels record improves to 4-2 overall on the season, while the Broncos drop to 3-2.
