SAN FRANCISCO - A three-pointer by Maria Getty in overtime punched the ticket for Villanova's 73-70 win over San Francisco in the 2007 Odwalla Classic championship game Saturday evening. Senior Dominique Carter continued her recent tear for the Dons recording 18 points and nine rebounds, including a game tying basket as the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation.
San Francisco falls to 3-3 in 2007-08, while Villanova bumps up to 4-1.
After leading 28-23 at half time, San Francisco continued to push back the Wildcats until the Big-12 school cut the Dons' lead to 54-49. Getty hit one of her four threes and then Laura Kurz scored a lay-up to tie the game at 54-54. Getty nailed a free throw with 11-seconds left on the clock giving Villanova a 60-58 cushion and set up Carter's heroics. Following her missed lay-up under the basket, Carter jumped high for the rebound, touched the glass with a soft shot and rolled two points home.
The Dons inched to within one of Villanova on three separate occasions in the extra frame, including a 71-70 score following two free throws by sophomore Katie Mihalco, but the Wildcats made four of six from the line in the final twenty seconds to hand USF it's third loss of the year.
Along with Carter, USF had three other players in double figures. Sophomore Heidi Heintz had 15 points and nine rebounds, junior Shay Rollins racked up 14 points, six rebounds and two steals, and Mihalco had 11 points.
Villanova's Laura Kurz made a big difference off the Wildcats' bench, scoring 25 points on 10-for-16 shooting while also grabbing nine rebounds. Getty had 17 points and Lisa Karcic added 13.
San Francisco plays at Stanford on Wednesday. Tip from Palo Alto, Calif., is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.
