Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's women's basketball team suffered its first home loss on the season in a 79-64 decision against Missouri Saturday night from McKeon Pavilion. The Gaels ended up securing second place in the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic and after the day fall to 2-2 on the season.
Sophomore guard Jontelle Smith led SMC with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Junior forward Maija Lahde added 11 points on 5-of-15 shooting while junior guard Serena Benavente chipped in with a season-high 10 points. Lahde also added nine boards.
Alyssa Hollins led all players with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Three other Tigers recorded double-digits, including Carlynn Savant who tallied 15 points and 16 rebounds.
The Gaels once again trailed at the half but this time could not overcome the deficit. After trailing 39-25 at the intermission, SMC cut it to as close as seven with nine minutes left.
The Gaels shot 37 percent on 25-of-67 shooting. SMC also only shot 58 percent from the charity stripe and 25 percent from beyond the arc.
The Tigers shot 51 percent on 29-of-57 shooting and 33 percent from three point land. Missouri converted 70 percent of its free throws.
Junior forward Monica Mertle was selected to the all-tournament team after recording nine points and four rebounds. Mertle poured in a career-high 22 against Northridge on Friday night.
Junior guard Lauren Shaughnessy handed out seven assists while scoring six points and grabbing six boards.
Saint Mary's will continue its homestand on Monday, November 27 against Utah State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from McKeon Pavilion.
