Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team suffered a 67-61 loss to the Utah State Aggies Monday night from McKeon Pavilion. Junior forward Maija Lahde led the way for SMC with 12 points and 13 rebounds. After the night, the Gaels drop to 2-3 on the season.
At the intermission both teams were in a dead heat as the Gaels held a slight 30-29 lead. But to start the second half, USU (2-2) rallied off a 15-4 run to take a quick 34-44 lead with 13:18 left.
The Gaels got to within four with a minute left but were unable to make the basket that would get them over the hump. Once Saint Mary's started to foul, Utah State came through at the line shooting 86.7 percent from the charity stripe.
The Gaels shot 32.4 percent from the floor and only 18.2 percent from beyond the arc. SMC also shot 57.9 percent from the charity stripe. USU connected on 40.3 of its shots and 30.8 percent from three.
Lahde led the Gaels with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior guard Serena Benavente, junior forward Monica Mertle and senior center Sheridan Arredondo all chipped in with nine points a piece.
The Aggies were led by Brittany Phillips' 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting. Danyelle Snelgro followed with 14 and Jenny Gross added 12.
Both teams turned the ball over 19 times in a game which at times turned into an absolute track meet. The Gaels made nine steals and were led by three who tallied two a piece.
Saint Mary's will head on the road to Eugene, OR on Thursday, November 30 to face the Oregon Ducks. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from McArtur Court.
