Stockton, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team exploded in the second half to defeat the Pacific Tigers, 82-68. Smith led the way throughout the game, scoring a season and game-high 22 points, while tallying two steals and two assists. Smith shot perfectly from the free-throw line, 6-of-6, while shooting 6-of-12 from the floor, and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Smith provided the only consistency in the game, posting 13 points in the first half and eight in the second.
Freshman forward Louella Tomlinson ignited in the second half for the Gaels. Tomlinson played limited minutes in the first half, only scoring two points and recording no other statistics. Tomlinson came out to play after half-time, posting 20 points, eight blocks, six rebounds, and one steal. Tomlinson's statistics topped her previous career-highs, as she set new personal bests in points and blocks. The Aussie shot perfectly from the free-throw line, knocking down 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Tomlinson broke the Saint Mary's record for blocks in a game with eight, shattering the previous record of five. With the eight blocks tonight the freshman has totaled 32 blocks on the season.
Smith and Tomlinson combined to shoot 50 percent from the floor, 13-of-16, and were perfect from the free-throw line, 14-of-14. Two other Gaels recorded double-digits in points, as Serena Benavente and Sierra Chambers each chipped in 12 points.
The Gaels turned their play up a notch in the second half, as they recorded a 53.1 percent field goal percentage, improving their shooting percentage by 17 percent from the first half. As a team Saint Mary's tallied eight assists, eight blocks, and five steals in the second half, improving their numbers from the first half in each category.
The Tigers were led by Jake Kelly with 13 points, with three other Pacific players totaling double-digits in points. Janae Young recorded a game-high 12 rebounds for Pacific, while Amy VanHollebeke dished out a game-high seven assists.
With the win the Gaels improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Tigers drop to 3-2. Saint Mary's will return to action over the weekend against two ranked opponents. On Friday, November 30 at 7:00 PM the Gaels will play the #13 California Golden Bears. The Gaels will then face #18 Vanderbilt on Saturday, December 1 at 4:00 PM.
