Eugene, OR- The Saint Mary's women's basketball team suffered a 79-53 loss against the Oregon Ducks Thursday night from McArthur Court. Oregon opened up the contest with a 43-point first half to pull away with an insurmountable margin. After the loss, SMC falls to 2-4 overall while UO improves to 5-1 on the season.
The Gaels cut their deficit to 18-15 at the 9:31 mark, Oregon closed out the half on a 25-2 run to lead 43-19 at halftime. SMC was down in the opening minutes by the score 13-2.
Saint Mary's had just six field goals in the first half, while the Ducks made 48-percent of their shots from the field in both halves.Saint Mary's fared better in the second period and closed the 24-point deficit down to 16 but Oregon quickly answered back with a 13-2 run to put the Gaels away.
Eleanor Haring led all scores with 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Four other Ducks finished with double digits, including Jessie Shetters who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior guard Lauren Shaughnessy led the Gaels on the glass with seven boards. Shaughnessy also added six points and four assists.Overall the Gaels shot 30 percent on 17-of-57 from the floor, 36-percent (5-of-14) from beyond the arc and 70-percent (14-of-20) from the charity stripe.
Freshman Lisa Busch notched five points in her first action as a Gael. Busch, a Eugene, OR native went 2-for-2 with a three.
Oregon shot 48 percent on 28-of-58 shooting and drained 43 percent on their threes. The Ducks converted 17-of-26 free throws.
Saint Mary's will return home for its lone contest in McKeon Pavilion for the week. The Gaels will host the Pacific Tigers on Sunday, December 3 with tip-off slated for 2:05 p.m.
