Second Half Woes On the Road

Dec. 1, 2006

IRVINE, Calif. - Angie Ned scored 37 points to lead UC Irvine to a 79-59 win over Loyola Marymount in non-conference women's basketball action this evening in the Bren Events Center. The Lions led with 12 minutes remaining in the second half, but the Anteaters finished the game on a 33-11 for the victory. Jennifer Hall led LMU with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

LMU (4-4) opened the game well, pulling out to a 9-4 lead on a layup and foul shot by Cassady Moore. After the Anteaters (2-4) came back to take a 13-11 lead on a layup by Angie Ned, the Lions went on a 13-4 run to take a 24-17 lead at 6:48. However, the Anteaters continued to rebound well and got hot from outside to finished the half on a 22-10 run and take a 39-34 lead into the break.

Ned had 18 points in the first half, including two three-pointers. Hall led the Lions with 10 points in the first half with five rebounds. UCI outrebounded LMU 18-12 in the first half, led by Stephanie Duda with seven rebounds. Both teams shot 50% from the field in the first half.

The Lions cut the halftime deficit and took a lead 45-43 on a breakaway layup by Moore at 14:41. Ned stayed hot, scoring seven of UCI's first nine points. After LMU lead 48-46, UCI went on an 18-2 run to take an 14 point lead. The Lions were finally able to stop the run on a jumper by Hall at 6:23, but they went nearly eight minutes without a field goal. Every time the Lions would score, UCI would answer and the Anteaters kept the lead at double digits for the rest of the game. Turnovers and rebounding hurt the Lions in their comeback attempt.

LMU had 15 turnovers in the second half, and shot 34.8% from the field. UCI shot 46.2% from the field in the second half. Four UCI players finished in double digit scoring, led by Ned with 37 points. Duda recorded a double double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Moore and Valerie Ogoke each added nine points for LMU, and Moore had a career-high six steals.

The Lions return to action next Thursday, hosting Hawaii at Gersten Pavilion at 7:00pm.
