MALIBU, Calif. - Daphanie Kennedy connected on 2-of-2 from the free throw line with 19 seconds remaining in overtime and Terra Wallace missed a shot at the buzzer giving Pepperdine its fourth straight victory of the season 64-62 Friday night.
Teena Wickett made 6-of-11 shots and scored 17 points, and Sherriel Boyd added 17 points in the first start of her career. Wicketted added 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double and third of the season.
Pepperdine (6-2) is off to its best start since 2000-01 and has equaled its longest win streak since Julie Rousseau took over in 2004-05.
Pepperdine went 27-of-34 from the free throw stripe, including 5-for-5 in the overtime period.
UTA (3-3) held a two-point leads on two occasions in overtime until Boyd was fouled on a layup and converted the point after to give Pepperdine a 60-59 lead with 2:14 to play. Two more Boyd free throws extended the lead to three.
With 40 seconds remaining the Mavericks tied the score for the ninth time in the contest setting up Kennedy's heroics.
UTA never led by more than four and Pepperdine never led by more than eight in the tightly contested affair.
Trailing 15-13, Pepperdine used a 12-1 run over a span of nearly four minutes to gain its largest lead of the night 24-16.
Pepperdine led 26-24 at the half and never led by more than six in the second half.
UTA held Pepperdine without a field goal over the final 4:20 of the game and outscored the Waves 11-5 during that span to force overtime.
