Kennedy, Waves Breeze Past 49ers

MALIBU, Calif. - Even without Teena Wickett and Teiosha George for the second straight game, Pepperdine was able to dominate Long Beach State in the paint, outscoring the 49ers 24-16, en route to a 69-42 victory in Firestone Fieldhouse.

Long Beach State (1-10) hit two of its first three shots and led 4-0 before Daphanie Kennedy sparked the Waves (7-3) to a 23-11 run over a 12-minute span.

Shannon Johnson gave Pepperdine its first lead of the night with 8:03 remaining in the first half and the Waves never trailed again, leading by 17 at the half.

Pepperdine shot .517 on 15-of-29 shooting during the first 20 minutes of play to Long Beach State's .286 (17-of-49).

The second half was all Pepperdine as Long Beach was never closer than 17 and trailed by as many as 31 late.

Kennedy led Pepperdine with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while Miranda Ayim and Johnson added 10 apiece. Jessica Ross finished the night with nine points.

Karina Figueroa scored a game-high 21 for Long Beach as the only player to reach double-digits in scoring for the visitors.

Pepperdine will return to action Monday night when it hosts UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. in Malibu. The Waves are 2-1 against teams from the Big West Conference this season.
