Corpus Christi, TX- The Saint Mary's women's basketball team fell in its Flint Hills Islander Classic opener 96-79 to host Corpus Christi Saturday night. The Gaels were within three at the break but eventually fell to the Islanders from the American Bank Center. After the day, SMC drops to 2-7 overall while TAMUCC improves to 3-5.
In a high scoring affair where both teams were torching the nets in the first half, it was the host Islanders who erupted for 50 points in the second half to secure the victory.
Nicole Duncan led all scorers with 24 points, including a 6-for-9 output from beyond the arc. Kirbria Lewis poured in 20 points and eight assists while Jillianne Duffey added 19 points and Jenesis Shaw tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Saint Mary's out-shot Corpus Christi 50 percent (32-for-64) to 49 percent (34-for-69) but TAMUCC shot 58 percent (11-for-19) from beyond the arc. SMC shot a respectable 42 percent (5-for-12) from three.
The Gaels grabbed their only lead of the contest late in the first half with 5:57 left. Benavente drilled a 3-pointer on an assist by senior center Sheridan Arredondo to make the score 33-32.
SMC went on a 29-17 run to grab the lead after trailing 15-4 with five minutes into the ballgame.
Down three at the half the Gaels pulled to within one two minutes into the second period but the Islanders then went on a 24-14 run to grab a double-digit lead (72-61) with 7:22 left.
Saint Mary's pulled to within eight with 6:24 left, but Corpus Christi then rallied off an 18-10 run to secure a 20-point cushion with 1:06 left.
SMC was out-rebounded by TAMUCC 40-33 and the Gaels turned the ball over 22 times to the Islanders 19. Lahde led Saint Mary's on the glass with nine while Obaiza grabbed seven.
Junior guard Lauren Shaughnessy finished with eight points, seven assists, three steals and two rebounds.
Saint Mary's will continue Flint Hills Islander Classic play tomorrow against Cal Poly. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. CT from the American Bank Center.
