LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU women's basketball team struggled in its first game back from final exams, falling to Northern Arizona 74-58 in Gersten Pavilion this evening. The Lumberjacks led from the start, and hit big shots to thwart LMU's rally attempts. Cassady Moore broke her career-high with 14 points, and Jennifer Hall added 14 points and eight rebounds. The Lions return to action on Thursday night in Fresno, taking on the Bulldogs at 7:00pm.
The Lumberjacks (7-4) led from the start, pulling out to a 5-0 lead to begin the game. The Lions (6-5) made it a one point game, 7-6, on a layup by Kavita Goss, but NAU scored the next nine points to extend the lead to 10 points and the Lumberjacks wouldn't look back. Every time a Lion rally would start, the Lumberjacks answered and kept the lead. For the half, NAU shot 51.7% from the field, while LMU shot just 37.5%. Two NAU players scored in double digits in the first half- Kim Winkfield (11) and Megan Porter (10). Jenna Sybesma and Moore paced the Lions with six points each.
LMU improved offensively in the second half, shooting 40.6%, but NAU stayed hot and shot over 54% for the second half. After NAU took a 44-30 lead, LMU scored four points to cut the margin to 10 points, 44-34, but it would be as close as they would come in the second half.
A bright spot for LMU was the play of Moore. She shot 6-for-11 from the field and broke her career-high for the second straight game, finishing with 14 points. She also recorded three steals and two blocks. Hall scored in double digits for the eighth time this season, finishing with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Amanda DeCoud chipped in nine points, and Sybesma matched her career-high with eight points.
Winkfield led NAU with 14 points, and Porter finished with 12. The Lumberjacks had a balanced scoring attack with seven players scoring six or more points.
The Lions return to action for three straight road games to close out 2006. They start the road trip at Fresno on Thursday night, taking on the Bulldogs at the Save Mart Center at 7:00pm.
