MALIBU, Calif. - Freshman Miranda Ayim had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Daphanie Kennedy scored 19 points as the Pepperdine Waves fell to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos 78-67 on Monday night in Malibu, Calif.
Sherriel Boyd scored 12 points for the Waves, who are now 7-5 on the season after starting the season 6-2.
UC Santa Barbara's (4-6) comeback from 15 down in the first half was fueled by connecting on 22-of-32 from the free throw line in the second half. Pepperdine went 3-for-3 over the same time period.
Ariana Gnekow's jumper with 8:47 to play in the game gave Santa Barbara its first lead since 4-2. The points came in the beginning of what would be a 12-0 run over nearly five minutes.
Pepperdine opened the second half with an 8-2 run to extend its 35-32 halftime lead to ten.
Santa Barbara would outscore Pepperdine 15-5 over the next six minutes to tie the game at 53-all with 9:39 left to play.
Trailing 4-2, Pepperdine used a 27-10 run to take its biggest lead of the contest 29-14 at the 8:19 mark of the first half. But the Gauchos would score 18 of the final 24 points of the half to close the gap to three at the break.
Jenna Green led all players with 21 points, 11 from the free throw line. LaShay Fears added 16 points, while Jessica Wilson and Chisa Ononiwu had 13 and 10, respectively.
Pepperdine will return to action Thursday when it travels to San Diego State for a 7 p.m. PT tip-off against the Aztecs.
