WCC Women's Basketball Opens 2014 With Week Two of League Play

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference plays its first games of 2014 in week two of league action. Four WCC programs – BYU, Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and San Diego earned national top-25 votes this week. The Toreros opened up WCC play at 2-0, remaining unbeaten at 13-0, continuing the best start in program history. The Cougars and Gaels also opened at 2-0, each improving to 12-1 overall. The WCC posted a 69-41 non-conference record (62.7%) and the top four teams in the league standings own a combined slate of 48-5 (90.6%). 

WCC QUICK HITS

  • Through December 22, WCC teams own a 62.7% winning percentage vs. non-conference foes, including a 42-15 (73.7%) rate on their home floors. See page 2 for more.
  • WCC Teams rate in the top-25 among NCAA Division I leaders in several categories:  Assists - BYU (18th/18.8); Blocks - BYU (4th/6.3); Field Goal % - Saint Mary's (16th/47.0); Free Throw % - Saint Mary’s (16th/76.0); 3P Field Goal % - Saint Mary’s (3rd/43.8); Scoring - Saint Mary’s (23rd/82.3); Steals - Gonzaga (15th/11.8); Scoring Defense - San Diego (8th/53.8).   • BYU’s Jennifer Hamson is 3rd among Division I blocked shots leaders (4.1) and is 20th in field goal % (59.2); Saint Mary’s Danielle Mauldin (5th/9) and BYU’s Jennifer Hamson (9th/8) and Pacific’s Kendall Kenyon (9th/8) rank in the top-10 in double-doubles; Gonzaga’s Jazmine Redmon is 6th in assist/turnover ratio (3.75) and BYU’s Kylie Maeda is 9th (3.45); Saint Mary’s Jackie Nared is 14th in scoring (22.3) and 3rd in 3-point field goal % (52.3); Saint Mary’s Danielle Mauldin leads the nation in rebounds (14.5); Pacific’s Kendall Kenyon is 10th in rebounds (11.9);  Gonzaga’s Haiden Palmer is 5th in steals (3.3); BYU’s Kim Beeston is 21st in 3-pointers (3.1) and 20th in 3-point field goal % (45.7); Saint Mary’s Lauren Nicholson in 7th in 3P FG% (50.0).   • Four WCC teams - Gonzaga (1), San Diego (2), BYU (3) and Saint Mary’s (6)  - cracked this week’s mid-major top-25 poll as released by College Basketball Insiders.
  • Three WCC teams - Saint Mary’s (15), Gonzaga (17) and San Diego (20) are in this week’s RPI top-25.

WCC in National Trends
The WCC continues to rate in the top-six among Division I conferences in national trends as of Dec. 29.
Scoring: 6th (73.08 ppg)
Rebounds: 5th (42.77 rpg)
3-Point Field Goal Percentage: 6th (32.79)  

WCC NON-CONFERENCE NOTES
The West Coast Conference posted a strong non-conference resume.

  • The WCC posted winning records against three “power” conferences: the ACC (2-1), Big East (2-0), Big-10 (2-0).
  • The WCC went .500 (8-8) against the Pac-12 in 2013-14 and six schools collected at least one victory against a league member. BYU and Saint Mary’s each collected two victories vs. the Pac-12.
  • The WCC also turned in solid showings against the Mountain West (11-9), the Big West (14-11), the Big Sky (10-3) and the WAC (7-3).
    • The WCC did not post a losing record against a conference it played at least four games.

WCC Closes Non-Conference Strong

The West Coast Conference closed non-conference play with a flourish posting a combined record of 11-4 in the final eight days of non-league contests, including a perfect 6-0 slate Dec. 21 - the final day before the start of WCC action.
