PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 6 Rutgers University handed Pepperdine women's basketball team its fifth straight loss Wednesday night 55-45, at Louis Brown Athletic Center, in Piscataway, N.J.
In a game that saw the Waves (5-7) tie the score twice and the Scarlet Nights (10-2) never quite take command of the lead, both teams appeared to lack intensity. Pepperdine out rebounded Rutgers 33-29, but suffered from 17 rebounds. Neither team was able to shoot to its potential from beyond the 3-point arc. The Scarlet Night shot 1-for-11, while the Waves were 0-for-7 with the exception of freshman Katie Menton (Yosemite, Calif. / Yosemite HS) who shot 3-for-10. Pepperdine shot 34% from the field to Rutgers 41%.
Tonight's game marked the first time Rutgers has been outrebounded by an opponent in the last seven contests.
Senior Daphanie Kennedy (Oakland, Calif. / Kearny HS) and Menton were the leading scorers for Pepperdine with 10 points each. Sophomore Teena Wickett (Oakland, Calif. / Castlemont HS) led the Waves for rebounds with nine, while Kennedy and Senior Teiosha George (Palmdale Calif. / Palmdale HS) contributed five a piece.
Pepperdine ends its ten-day road trip Friday night, when they meet University of Colorado at Coors Events / Conference Center, in Boulder, Colorado at 5:30 p.m. CT.
