Women's Basketball Heads into Fifth Week of WCC Play

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference is set for what promises to be another exciting slate of games in week five of league play. Three WCC programs – No. 25/22 Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and San Diego – earned national top-25 votes this week and four teams rated in the top-6 of the Mid-Major Top-25 poll as released by College Basketball Insiders. The Bulldogs sit atop the standings at 6-1, Saint Mary’s is at 6-2, San Diego is 5-2, while BYU is 4-3.

  • BYU’s Jennifer Hamson is 3rd among Division I blocked shots leaders (3.78) and is 14th in field goal % (59.1); Saint Mary’s Danielle Mauldin (1st/15), Pacific’s Kendall Kenyon (11th/12) and BYU’s Jennifer Hamson (16th/11) rank in the top-15 in double-doubles; Gonzaga’s Jazmine Redmon is 13th in assist/turnover ratio (3.05) and BYU’s Kylie Maeda is 23rd (2.57); Saint Mary’s Jackie Nared is 17th in scoring (22.1); Saint Mary’s Danielle Mauldin is fourth in rebounds (13.9); Pacific’s Kendall Kenyon is 17th in rebounds (11.0);  Gonzaga’s Haiden Palmer is 8th in steals (3.2), Pacific’s KiKi Moore is 23rd (2.8); Saint Mary’s Lauren Nicholson in 6th in 3P FG% (48.0).
  • Four WCC teams - Gonzaga (1), San Diego (3) and Saint Mary’s (5) and BYU (6)  - cracked the top-6 of this week’s mid-major top-25 poll as released by College Basketball Insiders.
  • Three WCC teams - Gonzaga (13), San Diego (20) and Saint Mary’s (32) are in this week’s RPI top-32.
  • Saint Mary’s Danielle Mauldin needs just two rebounds to take over the WCC career record, entering the weekend with 1,121. Saint Mary’s Louella Tomlinson (2007-11) holds the record with 1,122.

TWO WCC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ALUMNI TO BE INDUCTED: Two WCC women’s basketball alumni will be inducted into the 2014 Hall of Honor on Saturday, March 8 at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev. Ten individuals, one from each member institution, will be honored as part of the 2014 West Coast Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships from March 6-11 at the Orleans Arena. Portland’s Laura Sale O’Connell and Saint Mary’s Tracy Morris Sanders will represent their respective institutions. Sale O’Connell was the WCC Player of the Year in 1996 and Morris Sanders collected WCC Player of the Year accolades in 1999. COMPLETE RELEASE .

WCC in National Trends
The WCC continues to rate in the top-six among Division I conferences in national trends as of Jan. 19.
Field Goal Percentage: 6th (41.65)
Free Throw Percentage: 4th (70.72)
Rebounds: 6th (41.21 rpg)

National Recognition
San Diego’s Amy Kame earned NCAA National Player of the Week (1/6) honors after leading the Toreros to a sweep against Saint Mary’s and Pacific. Kame is the second WCC student-athlete to earn national accolades in the last two weeks, joining Saint Mary’s Danielle Mauldin, who was named the ESPNW National Player of the Week (12/29) after leading the Gaels to an upset win against then-No. 24 Gonzaga.

The West Coast Conference posted a strong non-conference resume.

  • The WCC posted winning records against three “power” conferences: the ACC (2-1), Big East (2-0), Big-10 (2-0).
  • The WCC went .500 (8-8) against the Pac-12 in 2013-14 and six schools collected at least one victory against a league member. BYU and Saint Mary’s each collected two victories vs. the Pac-12.
  • The WCC also turned in solid showings against the Mountain West (11-9), the Big West (14-11), the Big Sky (10-3) and the WAC (7-3).
    • The WCC did not post a losing record against a conference it played at least four games.
