San Bruno, Calif. - With the conclusion of the West Coast Conference women's basketball regular season, conference squads now turn their attention to the WCC Tournament, which begins on Thursday, March 1 at the University of Portland's Chiles Center.
Gonzaga captured its third straight league crown, and will be the top seed in the WCC women's tournament. San Diego earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament with a 10-4 mark in league play, while Loyola Marymount secured the No. 3 seed in the tournament for the second straight year. Saint Mary's received the No. 4 spot, and Pepperdine is seeded No. 5. Santa Clara and San Francisco are seeded No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, and host Portland rounds out the tournament field at No. 8.
San Diego will face San Francisco at 12:00 pm on Thursday to tip off the tournament, and will be followed by the Gonzaga vs. Portland contest to wrap up the first session. Loyola Marymount begins the second session against Santa Clara at 6:00 pm, followed by Saint Mary's taking on Pepperdine in the final game of the first day.
Teams will be re-seeded following the first round, and the semifinals will take place on Saturday, March 3 following a day off on Friday. Sunday's WCC Tournament championship game is slated for a 1:00 pm start, and will be televised live on College Sports Television (CSTV).
The 2007 WCC Tournament marks the first time that the women's event has been held at the University of Portland. This season is the final of a two-year site rotation in the Pacific Northwest for the WCC Tournament, following last year's tournament at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, WA. Pepperdine claimed last season's title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
