SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team nearly swept the West Coast Conference yearly honors after capturing its third-straight WCC regular-season title and the top seed in the WCC Tournament. Senior Stephanie Hawk was named Co-Player of the Year, while head coach Kelly Graves was named Co-Coach of the year and Bulldog freshman Heather Bowman was tabbed for Newcomer of the Year honors.
Hawk, who shares the Player of the Year honors with University of San Diego junior Amanda Rego, is the second Bulldog in the last three years to earn the conference's top honor, following former teammate Shannon Matthews in 2005. Hawk is the only player to currently rank among the top three in the conference in both scoring (14.9 ppg - 3rd) and rebounding (7.9 rpg - 2nd). Hawk also averages 2.1 blocks, 1.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She finished the regular-season with 11 double-doubles to her credit, including nine double-doubles in WCC action. Hawk became the Bulldog career leader in blocks during the last regular-season game of the year and now has 153 to her credit. She also ranks fourth in career rebounds with 649 and is 10th in points with 1,194. Hawk was named WCC Player of the Week four times this season and was the WCC Player of the Month for January. This is her second-straight first-team All-WCC honors.
Bowman is only the second Bulldog to ever earn WCC Newcomer of the Year honors. Former Zag Juanita Rivera was tabbed Newcomer of the Year for the 1991-92 season. In addition to her Newcomer of the Year award, Bowman also garnered All-WCC first-team honors and WCC All-Freshman accolades. Bowman closed out the season averaging 12.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. In conference action, she averaged a WCC-best 16.3 points, along with 7.1 rebounds per contest. On the season, Bowman scored in double-digit points in 20 contests, including in 13 out of Gonzaga's 14 WCC games. Bowman was named WCC Player of the Week once this season.
Graves, who shares Coach of the Year honors with University of San Diego head coach Cindy Fisher, earned Coach of the Year honors for the third time in the last five seasons after guiding Gonzaga to a 21-9 overall mark and an impressive 13-1 record in conference play. Graves also earned the accolade in 2003 and 2005. This season marks just the second time, and the first time since the 1992-93 season, that the WCC has honored Co-Coaches of the Year.
Rounding out the WCC yearly honors was Amanda DeCoud of Loyola Marymount who was named Defensive Player of the Year.
The remainder of the first-team included Dominique Carter of the University of San Francisco, Chandice Cronk of Santa Clara University, Laiken Dollente of the University of Portland, Amanda Patton from Loyola Marymount University, Rego and Amber Sprague of San Diego, Jontelle Smith from Saint Mary's College and Teena Wickett of Pepperdine University.
