MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine senior Kelsey Ball was named the 2005-06 West Coast Conference (WCC) Defensive Player of the Year Monday by the league office. Jasmane Clarendon and Daphanie Kennedy were selected to the All-WCC first team, while Jessica Ross was named to the All-freshman team to round out Pepperdine's conference honor recipients.
Ball averaged 5.9 rebounds per game with seven blocked shots and 11 steals in just over 26 seconds of play per game during this, her senior season. Ball becomes just the second Wave to earn DOY honors, joining NeSha Thomas who claimed the award after the 2000-01 season.
For Clarendon and Kennedy, today's announcement marks the first time in their careers either has been named to the conference's first team. Clarendon led the Waves with 11.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per WCC contest this season, while Kennedy was second on the squad at 11.2 points per league game.
Ross was named to the All-freshman team after starting all 14 conference games and averaging 5.6 points on 37 percent shooting and 2.8 rebounds.
Santa Clara's Michelle Cozad was tabbed conference Player of the Year, while Bronco coach Michelle Bento-Jackson was named Coach of the Year. Loyola Marymount's Ashlee Dunlap captured Newcomer of the Year honors.
Pepperdine will face Saint Mary's in the first round of the WCC tournament Thursday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 30 minutes after the LMU versus San Diego game which is set for a Noon start. The tournament will take play in Spokane, Wash., and will run through Sunday.
