2009 WCC Women's Tournament Semifinal Round Quotes

March 8, 2009

Gonzaga University Head Coach Kelly Graves

Opening Statement:
First of all, I want to say congratulations to Julie and her team. They really played hard and LMU deserves a lot of credit. They had a great season and they played with a lot of heart right till the end. I thought especially the last 10 to 12 minutes of that game, they outplayed us. I am happy that we are moving on, obviously built a nice cushion - I don't think they ever got inside 10. We just didn't maybe maintain our focus the whole time but I am proud of the way we started the ball game.

Senior Guard Jami Schaefer
On coming back after an injury:
I was out for a while and it is tough to come back full speed but my teammates just had confidence in me. They kept telling me, "You got it. You got it." The first couple of games, I was struggling offensively, but they just picked me up and gave me confidence. It is fun.

Sophomore Guard Courtney Vandersloot
On the physical nature of the game:
LMU always play hard and they are going to play hard. They wanted it a lot. We got to give it to them. I think at a point we were kind of on our heels playing just because it was so aggressive. We answered, we came out, and that is the way the tournament goes. Everyone wants to win so bad, it is going to be aggressive throughout the whole thing.

Junior Forward Vivian Frieson
On LMU pressing defense:
We kind of expected it, but I don't think we handled their pressure very well. I think that is something we are going to have to do tomorrow if San Diego or Portland presses us.

Loyola Marymount University Head Coach Julie Wilhoit
Opening statement:
Congratulations to Gonzaga, a really beautiful team. I was very proud of my team. I think that we in so many ways had so many big goals this season. Certainly it was not to be eliminated, it was to win the championship. I thought today we played extremely hard, very hard. I could see it in my kids' faces. I could see it when things did not happen. I do not think we always make smart decisions but I think we played hard. We had some great looks and we missed opportunities and that was the difference maker.

Senior Guard Cassady Moore
On how the LMU program has changed:
My freshman year was an awesome team. We had the Zeeman twins, it was just a great program and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I knew I trusted the coaches; I trusted LMU and knew it was a place I wanted to be. Where I ended up now is one of my best season's overall. I would not be anywhere else except for LMU.

Freshman Guard Alex Cowling
On the difference between physicality and intensity levels from the regular season and tournament:
For this tournament they did let a lot go. It is more fun for the teams, if we play more physical. It is more fun to let things go and be more physical with each other.
