MORAGA, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's women's basketball team will host an opening round WNIT game on Thursday, March 17 when it takes on Nevada at McKeon Pavilion.
The Gaels are making their second consecutive WNIT appearance, after hosting Utah in 2010. Saint Mary's got the WCC's automatic berth with its second place finish during the conference season. Saint Mary's recorded a 10-4 record during conference play and earned the No. 2 seed in the WCC tournament.
At the WCC tourney is Las Vegas, the Gaels defeated San Diego 71-68 as Louella Tomlinson became SMC's all-time scoring leader. The Gaels went up against No. 20 Gonzaga in the championship game, and gave the Zags a battle in the first half as SMC even built a seven point lead. In the end, Gonzaga was too much as the Zags earned the WCC's automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.
Nevada enters the WNIT game with a 21-10 record, going 9-7 and a fourth-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference. Nevada has played some common opponents this year with SMC. The Wolf Pack defeated Pepperdine on November 14, 66-61, lost at Washington State 67-54 in December and went 2-1 against Idaho.
Nevada has some strong wins on its schedule, including wins over BYU and Arizona.
