SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's women's basketball team, regular-season and West Coast Conference Tournament champions, earned a 12 seed into the NCAA Tournament and will meet No. 5 seed Xavier University Saturday at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on the University of Washington campus in Seattle.
Xavier (25-6) won the regular-season Atlantic-10 title with a 13-1 record but fell to Dayton University 63-60 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Tournament.
The Musketeers had a 15-game winning streak snapped in the next-to-last regular-season game of the season, Temple University taking a 74-65 victory at home to hand Xavier its lone A-10 setback.
Ta'Shia Phillips, a 6-6 sophomore center from Indianapolis, Ind., leads the Musketeers. One of 19 John R. Wooden Award finalists and the A-10 Player of the Year, she averages 13.5 ppg and 11.9 rpg. She shot 61.3 percent from the field and had 53 blocked shots for 1.7 blocks/game.
