LOS ANGELES - Former Gonzaga University point guard Shannon Mathews has signed a training camp contract with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA and will attempt to the make the regular-season roster when camp opens in April. The Sparks were 17-17 last season losing in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. The team will play the first of two preseason games on May 9th against the Chicago Sky.
Mathews finished her four-year Gonzaga career in 2005 earning West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors. She was Gonzaga's inaugural women's basketball All-American, earning honorable mention honors from the Associated Press. She ranked 9th in the NCAA with 6.16 assists per game as she led Gonzaga to its first national ranking and a 28-4 record. Mathews finished her career ranking first in assists with 600 and 8th in scoring with 1,318 points.
Last season Mathews played for Amazone LR in the Dutch League. She helped guide her team to a 5th place regular-season finish before losing in the Dutch Cup semifinals. She averaged 22 points and 7 assists per game earning All-Star honors. She was named the MVP of the Dutch League All-Star game scoring 15 points with 10 assists as she led the North All-Star team to a 70-63 win over the South All-Star team.
