SPOKANE, Wash. - Current Gonzaga University women's basketball player Sasha Polishchuk will play for the Ukrainian Junior National Team when it participates in the U20 European Championships to be held July 13-17 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The U20 European Championships is a 16-team tournament that is broken into four groups during the preliminary rounds on July 13-17. Ukraine is a member of Group D that also features Bulgaria, France and Germany. Ukraine will play Bulgaria on July 13, France on July 14 and Germany on July 15. France won the championship in 2005 and placed third in both 2002 and 2006.
The top three teams in each group after the preliminary round will then qualify for the Qualifying Round. The bottom team in each preliminary group will play for 13th-16th in the Classification Games.
"I'm extremely excited for Sasha," said head coach Kelly Graves. "This will be a great experience for her. To play with and against so many high caliber athletes is tremendous. To be able to gain this international opportunity will only benefit her and our program."
Polishchuk, who just finished her sophomore campaign with Gonzaga, played in 31 games this past season. Polishchuk averaged 3.4 points, 2.2 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game in helping the Bulldogs capture their first-ever West Coast Conference Tournament title and their inaugural appearance in the NCAA Title.
