Saint Mary's Women's Basketball Coach Michelle Jacoby Will Not Return for 2006-07 Season

June 23, 2006

Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's College Director of Athletics Mark Orr announced today that Michelle Jacoby will not be returning as head coach of the women's basketball team for the 2006-07 season. Jacoby has served as head coach for the past six years, and was previously an assistant coach between 1997 and 2000.

"We appreciate the service Michelle has provided to the College and we all wish her the best in the future," said Orr.

Orr said the College was immediately launching a national search for a new head coach.

"It's time to take the women's basketball program in a new direction," he said. "I am confident that we will find the right candidate to lead the program forward."

In 2001, the Gaels won the West Coast Conference title and went on to play in the NCAA Tournament. During each of the past four seasons, the Saint Mary's women's basketball team has been eliminated from the WCC Tournament in the first round.

Saint Mary's College adopted a new strategic plan for Athletics in 2004 that called for increasing the resources for all of the school's Division I athletic programs so that they can compete more effectively for conference championships.

"I look forward to the women's basketball program being part of the overall resurgence of athletic success at Saint Mary's College," said Orr.
