Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's second-year head women's basketball coach Paul Thomas announced today the signing of Jasmine Smith. Smith comes to the Gaels from Oregon State and will be eligible to play in the 2008-09 season. Jasmine is the sister of 2007 All-WCC selection Jontelle Smith.
"We are extremely excited to add a player of Jasmine's caliber to our program," Thomas said. "She will add a tremendous amount of speed and quickness to our lineup. More importantly, she is returning home and will get to play alongside her sister."
As a freshman for the Beavers, Smith played in all 28 games and averaged 7.5 points per contest. Smith opened her collegiate career with 10 points against Southern Utah and then busted out for a career-high 20 points on 9-of-19 shooting the next game against Cal Poly.
Smith has a knack for raising her game while in the Bay Area. Against No. 21 Cal, Smith tallied 15 points and three steals. On the same road trip against No. 9 Stanford, the 5-8 guard poured in 14 points and shot 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. In her last game of the year at the Pac-10 Tournament in San Jose, Smith scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting against Arizona.
Smith was a four-year starter for coach Dan O'Shea at Pinole Valley. While at Pinole Valley, Smith was Street and Smith All-American, a first team All-Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League selection, a first team All-East Bay honoree, a first team All-Contra Costa Times selection and a second team All-State pick. Smith played in the Sac. vs. Bay All Star game and was named to the Contra Costa Times Top 100 Athletes list.
