SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The quest for the West Coast Conference women's basketball title will begin on January 3, 2013 as the West Coast Conference announced its conference women's basketball schedule on Monday. Each of the nine WCC schools will play the others twice for a total of 16 games and the season will culminate on Saturday, March 2.
The 2011-12 season marked the first time since 2002 that the WCC was represented by two teams in the NCAA Tournament. Regular-season champion Gonzaga and WCC tournament-champion BYU both played in the big dance, with the Bulldogs advancing to the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive season. Saint Mary's and San Diego participated in the Women's National Invitational Tournament. The Toreros advanced to the WNIT Semifinals before falling at eventual-champion Oklahoma State.
The 2012-13 West Coast Conference women's basketball schedule tips off on January 2, 2013, when Pepperdine visits PCH-Cup rival Loyola Marymount. San Diego visits 2011-12 regular season-champ Gonzaga. BYU hosts San Francisco on Saturday, January 5. The Cougars look to avenge a 71-64 loss to the Dons last February in Provo.
The much-anticipated rematch of last season's WCC Championship game will take place on Thursday, January 17 when BYU visits Gonzaga. The Cougars and Bulldogs split last season's regular season matchups and BYU won the WCC title game 78-66 over Gonzaga. All-conference point guard Haley Steed exercised her final season of eligibility and will return to the Cougars for her senior season.
Saint Mary's will face its Bay Area-rivals Santa Clara and San Francisco in consecutive weeks in the first month of the conference-slate. The Gaels will make the short trip to Santa Clara to face the Broncos on Thursday, January 24. SMC will then host San Francisco on Monday, January 28. The Gaels defeated UNLV in the first round of the WNIT last season and won a school record 22 games.
In February, the road to Las Vegas shortens as the conference tournament looms. Portland will end its season on the road at Pacific Northwest-rival Gonzaga and will then host BYU on Saturday, March 2.
The 2013 West Coast Conference Basketball Championships return to Las Vegas on March 6 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The title game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU Monday, March 11.
