Women's Basketball Gael Fest Huge Success

Moraga, CA - The 2007-08 Saint Mary's Women's Basketball team began practice on Friday, October 12 at 7:00 PM. The Gael's first practice was open to the public, as they hosted their first annual Gael Fest.

Over 50 fans, alumni, and boosters attended the event to watch the first practice and enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks. As the 2007-08 season approaches, women's basketball continues to generate support and enthusiasm throughout the local community. Head Coach Paul Thomas stated, "Gaels Fest was a huge success. I am very happy with the turnout and look forward to hosting many more events in the future."

The Gaels were picked to finish fifth in the West Coast Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll. Saint Mary's returns four of five starters, including WCC First team Selection Jontelle Smith. Joining Smith are seniors Maija Lahde, an honorable mention pick, Serena Benavente, and Lauren Shaughnessy. San Diego was picked to finish first in the conference with four first place votes, while Gonzaga received three first place votes.

Women's basketball will open the season on November 3 when they host Loyola University of New Orleans at 2:00 PM. Immediately following the game Saint Mary's will host their second annual Meet the Gaels night. The post game event will take place in the Soda Center on Saint Mary's Campus. A complimentary dinner will be served for all current Red Zone members; non-members will be charged $25.00 at the door. The post game event will allow fans a chance to meet their favorite players in a friendly and inviting atmosphere.
