With top players returning, a search for progress

All three of the Bay Area's West Coast Conference programs have a couple of things in common as the season begins.

Each has its best player back from last season and each is viewed as a long-shot prospect in a conference in which only the team at the top usually has a legitimate shot at postseason play.

St. Mary's coach Paul Thomas and USF's Tanya Haave are in the second season of their tenures, each looking to take the next step in a rebuilding job, with more consistent play and a quicker start now that their teams know the routine.
